*****CANCELLED***** When is a Family Farm Not a Family Farm? (Wooster)
NOTE: PROGRAM CANCELLED Matt Mariola will not be able to present the program.
The decades-long concern for the decline of small family farms is fueled by the economies of scale and low crop prices that incentivize farms to “get big or get out”. Farms continue to get larger on average, and more of our food continues to be produced by larger farms. Yet, 96% of all farms are classified as family farms by the USDA – even really big ones. In this talk, I will provide some basic statistics about small farms, large farms, family farms, and agricultural sales in order to create a discussion about small, family farming and whether we can do anything to stop its decline.
